Hair loss treatment

Excessive hair loss has many causes in both men and women. Without treatment, patients will continue to lose hair. Hair loss may be hereditary, age-related, or caused by disease. There are also many other trigger points for hair loss: scalp infections, scalp psoriasis, thyroid problems or other hormone imbalances, stress, some medications or supplements, cancer treatment, hair care products, lack of iron, zinc, biotin, protein, etc. Most cases of hair loss, except hereditary baldness, can be prevented.

Before making a diagnosis, it necessary to carry out a physical exam, consolidate your medical and family history, and find out your diet plan, hair care routine, etc. Some tests are advisable as well: a blood test, a pull test, light microscopy, a genetic test, etc. The treatment protocol is done individually, considering the patient’s medical history, laboratory test results, complaints and existing symptoms.

Background information

People typically lose 50 to 100 hairs a day. This usually isn’t noticeable.

Hereditary hair loss

Hereditary hair loss (androgenic alopecia) is the most common cause of hair loss worldwide. In women, the first noticeable sign of hereditary hair loss is usually overall thinning or a widening part. When a man has hereditary hair loss, the first sign is often a receding hairline or bald spot at the top of the head. Treatment can help stop or slow hair loss or even stimulate the regrowth of hair. The earlier the treatment is started, the better it works.

Age-related hair loss

With age, most people notice some hair loss because hair growth slows. At some point, hair follicles stop growing hair, which causes the hair on our scalp to thin. Hair also starts to lose its colour. A woman’s hairline naturally starts to recede. When started early on, treatment helps some people regrow their hair.

Hair loss related to alopecia areata

This condition develops when the body’s immune system attacks hair follicles, causing hair loss. A person can lose hair anywhere on his/her body, including the scalp, the inside of the nose, etc. Some people even lose their eyelashes or eyebrows. Special treatment may help stimulate regrowth.

“Sometimes solutions to hair loss are very simple, such as being gentler with your hair, by stopping aggressive treatments, using a less hot hair dryer, avoiding exposure to sunlight, eliminating some products from your diet, stopping smoking… Before making a diagnosis, it necessary to carry out a physical exam, consolidate your medical and family history, and find out your diet plan, hair care routine and so on.”
